Kuala Lumpur:Five technology drivers have been highlighted as crucial to Malaysia's national sovereignty and economic potential under the National Technology Sovereignty Framework (NTSF).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) has identified artificial intelligence (AI)-powered systems, sensor technologies including semiconductors, cybersecurity and encryption, big data analytics, and 5G/6G as the primary focus for investment and local capability development by 2030.
MOSTI responded to a query in Parliament from Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar (PN-Kemaman) regarding strategic technologies targeted to enhance Malaysia's homegrown technological capacity by 2030 and measures to prevent dependency on foreign technology. The ministry outlined that the other four technology drivers are blockchain, advanced 3D printing, neuro-technology, and biotechnology. It noted that biotechnology, due to its low market returns, requires initial public sector investment.
All nine technology drivers are expected to have transformative impacts across various sectors, bolster national resilience, and create economic opportunities. The list will be updated regularly based on global technology trends, scientific research, and industry roadmaps.
The identified technologies will be integrated into five national focus areas, including electrical and electronics, advanced materials, healthcare and life sciences, renewable energy, and agriculture and food. The aim is to apply strategic technologies in critical sectors such as food security, energy, health, and critical minerals.
MOSTI emphasized strengthening local AI development to reduce reliance on foreign technologies. This includes adapting AI models to the Malay language and local contexts. Enhancements to the national data ecosystem, computing infrastructure, and AI talent development are necessary for advancing AI model development, data management, and AI security.
Capacity building efforts will be supported by AI governance and cybersecurity to ensure safe, ethical, and responsible technology deployment.
