MOH Aims for Over 50% of Seniors to Retain 20 Natural Teeth by 2030

Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Health (MOH) is targeting more than 50 per cent of senior citizens to retain at least 20 natural teeth by 2030, in line with the National Oral Health Strategic Plan 2022-2030. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad emphasized the importance of oral health as part of overall well-being, highlighting the current situation where only 34.3 per cent of seniors have at least 20 natural teeth, according to the National Oral Health Survey of Adults (NOHSA) 2020.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad stressed the critical role of dental health in maintaining health, stating, "Teeth are the gateway to the body. We want to ensure this gateway continues to function and protect against various risks, including infections and food-related issues." The Health Minister made these comments during the launch of the 6020 Campaign and the National-level Kembara Senyuman 2026 programme.

To reach the 2030 target, the MOH will implement the Kembara Senyuman initiative throughout the country. This initiative will provide services such as denture provision directly to communities, care centers, and rural areas. The use of 3D digital technology (3DDT) will be integral in producing high-quality dentures efficiently, ensuring accessibility for all.

Dr Dzulkefly also noted the significance of these efforts in addressing the challenges posed by an ageing population, with statistics indicating that those aged 65 and above will constitute 8.0 per cent of the population by 2025. He emphasized that outreach programs extending services to rural areas are crucial to ensure vulnerable and high-risk groups receive necessary oral healthcare services.

Overall, the initiative underscores the government's proactive approach to providing comprehensive healthcare services, focusing on senior citizens, the infirm, persons with disabilities, and those living in remote areas.
