MMEA Detains Oil Tanker for Unauthorized Anchoring in Selangor Waters

Selangor: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Selangor has detained an oil tanker that was found anchored without permission in the waters around Port Klang. The incident occurred yesterday, and the vessel was detained at approximately 3 pm, located 0.9 nautical miles west of Port Klang, following a complaint from the Port Klang Authority (LPK).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Selangor MMEA director Maritime Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh stated that the vessel was operated by a captain with four crew members, all of whom are Indonesian nationals aged between 21 and 59. While the crew members possessed valid identification documents, the captain failed to provide necessary documentation authorizing the vessel to anchor.

The captain's failure to produce the required documents constitutes an offense under Section 491B(1)(l) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952, which mandates permission from the director-general of the Malaysian Marine Department (JLM) for anchoring. Abdul Muhaimin noted that an arrest warrant had been issued for the ship, and the captain has been taken to the Selangor State Maritime Headquarters to aid in further investigations.

Abdul Muhaimin emphasized that the Malaysian Maritime will not tolerate any violations of maritime laws. He reminded ship operators and owners of the importance of obtaining anchoring permission from JLM and adhering to regulations.

The MMEA is committed to ensuring compliance with maritime laws to maintain the safety and security of Malaysia's waters, particularly in Selangor. Abdul Muhaimin urged the public and maritime community to report any suspicious activities at sea via the 999 emergency line or the Selangor State Maritime Operations Centre for prompt action.
