Mindef Announces Major Overhaul of Anti-Corruption Plan to Restore Public Trust

Kuala lumpur: The Defence Ministry (Mindef) will carry out a major overhaul of its Anti-Corruption Plan this year as part of efforts to restore public trust and strengthen integrity and governance in the national defence sector. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin announced that all tender and procurement processes will also be reviewed and improved in line with best practices.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamed Khaled emphasized the need for Mindef and the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) to eradicate corruption and abuse of power that have taken root in the national defence system. He stated there will be zero tolerance for any wrongdoing, and those responsible should be prepared to face severe consequences if they compromise national security.

Mohamed Khaled highlighted that corruption deprives Malaysia of quality defence assets, endangers military personnel, and leads to waste and inefficiency, thereby weakening the effectiveness of the MAF as the country's main defence institution. He noted that corruption erodes the character of personnel trained in discipline and undermines Malaysia's ability to compete as a middle-power nation.

The minister further stated that Mindef will continue to strictly enforce regulations and disciplinary measures to curb corruption and abuse of power. Recent developments include the remanding of a former Army Chief and his two wives to assist investigations into corruption involving Malaysian Army procurement tenders.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has seized gold bars, high-performance sports utility vehicles, cash in various foreign currencies estimated at RM6.9 million, and 23 Rolex watches valued at about RM2 million, believed to be linked to the case.
