Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysia Hindu Sangam (MHS) has expressed gratitude towards Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil for his prompt action in ordering a comprehensive investigation into the behavior of presenters at a radio station under the Astro network. These presenters were observed making fun of a religious ceremony and posting the footage on social media this morning.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MHS issued a statement urging the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to swiftly address those involved in the incident. The association expects the radio station to act responsibly and correct the situation as soon as possible. MHS strongly condemned the video, asserting that ridiculing any religious practice is unacceptable in Malaysia’s multi-religious and multicultural context.
The statement emphasized the necessity for the sanctity of religious expressions to be respected by everyone, underscoring that no community should face such insensitivity. Despite an apology from the station’s personnel, MHS called for firm action, highlighting the negative precedent set by the incident. The association insisted that those responsible be held accountable legally to deter future instances of religious mockery. MHS reiterated the significance of national unity and mutual respect among Malaysians, irrespective of their religious beliefs.
Earlier, Minister Fahmi instructed the MCMC to carry out a detailed investigation. This includes summoning Astro and the radio station’s management to the MCMC headquarters for a full explanation, ensuring that actions align with existing regulations and laws.
Three presenters from the Malay-language radio station, identified as Nabil Ahmad, Azad Jasmin, and Radin, later issued apologies for their actions, which were considered offensive to the public’s sensitivities. The presenters have been temporarily removed from air duties pending the outcome of the company’s internal investigation.
Astro Audio released a statement acknowledging the seriousness of the incident and expressing regret over the video involving the three presenters, which was circulated on the ERA social media platform.
