Kuala Lumpur: The Southwest Monsoon is set to commence on May 10, extending until September, characterized by consistent southwest winds across Malaysia. Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) director-general Dr. Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip outlined the expected climatic conditions during this period.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Mohd Hisham stated that lower humidity levels during the Southwest Monsoon typically result in reduced rain cloud formation in most regions. Consequently, Malaysia is anticipated to experience fewer rainy days, leading to drier conditions overall.
Despite the general reduction in rainfall, Dr. Mohd Hisham highlighted the potential for heavy rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms, particularly in the early mornings in the western parts of the Peninsula, northern Sarawak, and western Sabah. These weather events are attributed to the squall line phenomenon, where converging winds create a line of thunderstorms that can persist for hours.
The peak monsoon period, from July to September, brings an increased risk of haze, both locally and across borders, if open burning is not controlled. Dr. Mohd Hisham emphasized the importance of avoiding open burning to mitigate haze and prevent environmental pollution. He also urged the public to conserve water during this time.
