MERCY Malaysia Urges Unified Efforts for Disaster Preparedness

Accra:MERCY Malaysia has urged communities, government agencies, the private sector, and humanitarian partners to enhance their collective efforts in disaster preparedness and risk reduction to foster safer and more resilient environments.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MERCY Malaysia's president, Datuk Dr. Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus, emphasized that preparedness should be an integral part of everyday practice for both communities and the organization's staff and volunteers before disasters occur. He highlighted the importance of communities having the necessary knowledge and support to comprehend the risks they face and take action to protect themselves and their families.

He stated that building resilience is a shared responsibility, which involves improving preparedness among MERCY Malaysia's staff and volunteers and collaborating with communities, government agencies, and humanitarian partners to mitigate risks and safeguard lives. This statement was made in conjunction with the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, observed today.

MERCY Malaysia advances disaster preparedness through various initiatives, including Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM), community-based early warning systems, and school preparedness programs. These efforts aim to assist communities in identifying local hazards, understanding their vulnerabilities, and taking practical steps to enhance readiness.

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is celebrated annually on October 13, with this year's theme, "Resilience Starts at Home," focusing on the role of households and communities in understanding local risks, implementing preventive measures, and preparing for emergencies.
