Johor:The emergency response plan for the Linggiu Dam located in Johor is set to be reviewed on November 5 during a Technical Working Group meeting. This review aims to enhance safety measures, establish early warning systems, and define population evacuation zones in case of a disaster.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof stated that the review will be led by a Technical Committee from the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation and Singapore's Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment. This follows an agreement made on August 3 under the 1962 Johor River Water Agreement.
Fadillah, who also serves as the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, highlighted the importance of preparing inundation maps and setting up effective communication for notifications and evacuation zones should any incidents occur. This was in response to a question in the Dewan Rakyat from Manndzri Nasib regarding the dam's early warning plan in the event of structural failure at full capacity.
He also emphasized that dam owners must adhere to the Malaysian Dam Safety Management Guidelines (MyDAMS) 2017, which cover monitoring, inspection, and maintenance. Additionally, Fadillah mentioned the need for collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency to establish early warning systems and evacuation plans.
He stressed the importance of preventive measures, noting that effective communication through various channels such as telephone and broadcasts is crucial in conveying early warnings to the public to minimize disaster risks.
