MERCY Malaysia Expands Nationwide Haze Emergency Response

Kuala Lumpur:MERCY Malaysia is extending its Haze Emergency Response across the nation to deliver public health information and practical assistance to communities impacted by haze, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the humanitarian organization announced that this initiative expands on its current efforts in Sarawak, where it has been engaged in public health advocacy, community awareness, and providing support to those affected by haze.

Several areas in Peninsular Malaysia, including Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Selangor, and Kuala Lumpur, are experiencing haze, with severity varying by location. Vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions are at the highest health risk.

As the Northeast Monsoon approaches, MERCY Malaysia is preparing for potential haze-related needs in western parts of the country and elsewhere. The organization is monitoring conditions, assessing emerging needs, and coordinating with relevant stakeholders.

In response, MERCY Malaysia has prepared Haze Emergency Response Kits. These kits contain items such as loratadine, wet wipes, normal saline, lozenges, a KF94 face mask, a small clear pouch, and a health information flyer.

The organization has called on federal and state authorities and relevant agencies to maintain strong coordination, issue timely public health advisories, support high-risk groups, and expedite assistance to affected communities.

MERCY Malaysia president Datuk Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus emphasized the importance of collective action involving government agencies, civil society, the private sector, and the public. He urged the public to adhere to health advisories, protect their families, check on neighbors, and support the most affected communities.

Cooperation among all parties is essential to ensure that information, protection, and assistance reach affected communities promptly. MERCY Malaysia is also seeking public and corporate contributions to aid in the preparation and distribution of haze response kits, as well as to support public health advocacy and assistance initiatives.
