MERCY Malaysia Expands Haze Response Efforts Across the Nation

Kuala Lumpur:MERCY Malaysia is broadening its Haze Emergency Response to encompass the entire nation, aiming to deliver health information and practical aid to communities affected by haze, with a focus on vulnerable groups.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the organization is building upon its existing efforts in Sarawak, where it has been involved in public health advocacy, community awareness, and support for those impacted by haze.

Several regions in Peninsular Malaysia, including Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Selangor, and Kuala Lumpur, are experiencing haze of varying severity. Vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions are at heightened health risk.

With the Northeast Monsoon approaching, MERCY Malaysia is preparing for potential haze-related challenges in the western parts of the country and other areas by monitoring conditions, assessing needs, and coordinating with stakeholders.

As part of their response strategy, the organization has developed Haze Emergency Response Kits, which include items like loratadine, wet wipes, normal saline, lozenges, a KF94 face mask, a small clear pouch, and a health information flyer.

MERCY Malaysia has called on federal and state authorities, as well as relevant agencies, to maintain strong coordination, issue timely public health advisories, support high-risk groups, and expedite assistance to affected communities.

Datuk Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus, president of MERCY Malaysia, emphasized that addressing the haze issue requires collective action from government agencies, civil society, the private sector, and the public. He urged the public to adhere to health advisories, protect their families, check on neighbors, and support the communities most affected.

The organization is also seeking public and corporate contributions to aid in the preparation and distribution of haze response kits, along with efforts in public health advocacy and community assistance.
