Kota bharu: A mentally disabled man was charged in the Magistrate's Court here today with murdering his father last week. Mohd Azwan Muhammad, 41, was charged with the murder of Muhammad Ishak, 83, at a house in Kampung Baung Bayam at 10:30 am on April 20. The charge was made under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or a maximum prison term of 40 years and not less than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Nadzir Abdullah stated that the post-mortem report had not yet been received. He requested that the accused be sent for a psychiatric assessment. The Magistrate, Rais Imran Hamid, ordered Mohd Azwan to undergo this assessment at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta, Perak, under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The court has scheduled June 30 for mention of the case. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat mentioned that preliminary investigations revealed the suspect, confirmed to suffer from schizophrenia, allegedly punched his father after being reprimanded for relieving himself.
