Kuala Lumpur:The Malaysian government has launched the Media Innovation Fund 2.0, reinforcing its commitment to supporting local media companies and safeguarding jobs amid current industry challenges.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the initiative aims to help media organizations acquire modern equipment and tools, enhancing their platforms and developing new revenue strategies. BERNAMA Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin emphasized that the fund represents a strategic government investment to secure the future of the nation's journalism industry.
Nur-ul Afida highlighted that the fund will allow media organizations like BERNAMA to boost their technological capabilities, develop talent, and produce quality content without compromising ethical standards, integrity, or journalistic freedom. She expressed BERNAMA's intent to apply for new equipment for its 14 bureaus nationwide, aligning with plans to strengthen its AI-driven newsroom and expedite digital transformation.
Additionally, Nur-ul Afida welcomed a new funding segment for news service and media content subscriptions, aligning with BERNAMA's role as the national news agency. This segment, she noted, could alleviate financial burdens associated with news service subscription costs, as suggested by media companies during a Media Dialogue session organized by the Malaysian Media Council in June.
Last Friday, Minister of Communications Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil announced the allocation of RM30 million through the Media Innovation Fund 2.0, continuing efforts to empower the local media industry. The fund addresses areas such as digitalization, talent development, and adopting new technologies like AI, as initially introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during National Journalists' Day (HAWANA).
The fund covers five key areas training for media personnel, software and technology adoption, equipment, hardware and supporting facilities, research and content development, and news service and media content subscriptions.
