Kuala lumpur: The Medical Device Authority (MDA) received more than 300 complaints related to medical devices in 2025, all of which were investigated and followed by enforcement or legal actions against companies found to have breached regulations.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MDA chief executive Dr Muralitharan Paramasua stated that by the end of the year, approximately 10 companies were convicted for offences such as selling unregistered devices or operating without valid licences. The remaining cases involved licence suspensions or revocations, which were part of intensified enforcement measures.
Dr Muralitharan highlighted that the most frequently reported products included contact lenses, thermometers, blood pressure monitors, catheters, and syringes, with a particular focus on consumable items. He emphasized the necessity for all medical devices marketed in Malaysia to undergo stringent evaluation and verification by the MDA to ensure their safety.
Furthermore, Dr Muralitharan noted that the authority is closely monitoring online sales channels, which have become a significant avenue for distributing unregistered products. He assured that the MDA would continue to enhance monitoring and enforcement efforts against parties selling unregistered medical devices or operating without valid licences to protect consumer safety.
He also urged the public to report any suspicious sales activities involving medical devices, emphasizing the collective effort required to safeguard public health. During the MDA Excellent Service Awards 2025, he expressed appreciation to the media for their role in raising awareness of the MDA's responsibilities and the importance of medical device registration.
Dr Muralitharan acknowledged the media's crucial role, noting that their coverage has helped the public understand the necessity for all medical devices to be registered and purchased from authorized representatives.
