Melaka:The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will not interfere in social media campaigns by contesting political parties during the 16th Melaka State Election, stated Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the commission will instead focus on monitoring social media platforms and will only take action against posts if complaints are received from the public. Fahmi outlined these measures when discussing MCMC's online monitoring strategies ahead of the Melaka polls, which are scheduled for November 14.
The minister further explained that MCMC is vigilant regarding the misuse of social media accounts, particularly in spreading false information, utilizing deepfakes, and sharing extremely offensive content. He noted a trend of content being uploaded by fake accounts that vanish after posting, a frequent occurrence that is increasingly concerning.
Fahmi highlighted that much of the derogatory content against the King originates from overseas accounts, with 98 percent identified as fake, emphasizing the seriousness of the issue. Additionally, regarding Pakatan Harapan's (PH) decision to appoint Parti Amanah Negara vice-president Adly Zahari as its Chief Minister candidate, Fahmi mentioned Adly's experience as a key factor in the decision.
PH election director Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari previously indicated that Adly, who is contesting for the Bukit Katil state constituency, would serve as the coalition's poster boy and Chief Minister candidate if PH secures victory in the Melaka polls. The Election Commission has set the polling day for November 14, with early voting on November 10.
