MCMC Demands Meta’s Clarification on WhatsApp Account Issues

Kuala Lampur:According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is seeking a thorough explanation from Meta regarding issues with WhatsApp accounts being suspended, inaccessible, or accessed without authorization.

MCMC has received 92 complaints about these issues and has taken steps to address them. An official request was sent to Meta on September 25, and discussions took place on September 28.

Meta has asked for time until October 2 to provide feedback. MCMC is pressing for a detailed explanation and a swift resolution for the affected accounts and will decide on further actions based on Meta's response.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil instructed MCMC to clarify Meta's response to the hacking and deactivation issues of WhatsApp accounts. He has yet to receive updates on the discussions between MCMC and Meta.

MCMC is investigating the complaints and has forwarded the cases to Meta for clarification. The commission explained that account takeovers or hacking and account blocking are distinct issues. Accounts hacked by unauthorized parties could be misused for scams, spam, or violations of WhatsApp's terms of service, potentially leading to account blocking.
