Kuala Lumpur:The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has conducted an engagement session with e-commerce platform providers, along with relevant ministries and agencies, to strengthen consumer protection and enhance the safety of Malaysia's e-commerce ecosystem.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the session was initiated in response to public concerns about consumer safety and legal compliance in the e-commerce sector. It aligns with Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil's focus on improving regulation through collaboration among ministries, enforcement agencies, and platform providers.
The discussions emphasized the importance of creating a balanced business environment between online and physical retail. Feedback from small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and the retail sector was considered, particularly regarding the impact of e-commerce growth on their businesses and its implications for the courier industry.
Key points included the responsibility of platform providers to enhance seller identity verification and ensure products comply with legal requirements and regulations. Platforms were urged to improve monitoring and use technology for prompt action against listings of prohibited, dangerous, or illegal goods.
These initiatives aim to establish a structured cooperation mechanism between platforms and government agencies, facilitating investigations and enforcement actions by relevant authorities. MCMC will continue coordinating with ministries, government agencies, and industry players to ensure effective measures for consumer protection, legal compliance, and platform accountability, contributing to a safer and more trusted e-commerce environment.
The e-commerce platforms involved in the session were Grab, Lazada Malaysia/Alibaba, Facebook Marketplace, Pinduoduo, SHEIN, Shopee Malaysia, and TikTok Shop. Participating ministries and agencies included the Communications Ministry, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, Health Ministry, Agriculture and Food Security Ministry, Royal Malaysia Police, Customs Department, Energy Commission, SIRIM Berhad, Companies Commission of Malaysia, Online Safety Committee, and Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia.
