Penang: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is assessing the feasibility of introducing a 'Pet Friendly Mall' concept at Gurney Paragon Mall, addressing concerns related to Islamic sensitivities and public interest.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, a site visit was conducted by MBPP at Gurney Paragon Mall with the council's mayor and representatives in attendance. The discussions involved the mall's management, who shared their existing house rules, and both parties considered potential strategies to improve control and enforcement.
The proposed measures include the installation of clearer signage in pet-friendly lift areas, a restriction on pet weight to a maximum of 15 kg, and a requirement for pets to be in a stroller or carrier at all times. Additionally, pets will only be allowed in the mall on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with enhanced security measures to ensure compliance with these regulations.
Pet owners will also need to use special diapers, utilize designated lifts, and properly dispose of animal waste. MBPP stressed that enforcing these house rules is the responsibility of the shopping complex management, while visitors are reminded to maintain public order and hygiene in consideration of societal sensitivities.
In their statement, MBPP noted that there is currently no specific bylaw regarding pets in shopping complexes. The council is reviewing the feasibility of implementing such a concept, with a focus on public interest and maintaining harmony in the multi-racial society.
