May 6 Decision on Najib’s Representation to Drop RM27 Million SRC Money Laundering Charges

Kuala Lumpur: The decision regarding Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s request to dismiss his three charges of money laundering related to SRC International Sdn Bhd funds totaling RM27 million will be announced on May 6. High Court Judge K. Muniandy determined the date following the prosecution’s request for a new case management date to provide updates on the representation’s outcome.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, deputy public prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul informed the court that the representation submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) in August 2023 remains undecided. Consequently, the prosecution sought a suitable case management date to update the court on the decision. Najib’s lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, mentioned plans to send an additional letter to the AGC seeking feedback on the August 2023 representation.

Muhammad Shafee also requested the court to vacate the previously scheduled trial dates, from May 19 to 23 and April 21 to 25, 2025, due to his involvement in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case and other criminal cases. Judge Muniandy granted the request to vacate the trial dates and scheduled May 6 for case management, during which the prosecution will update the court on the representation.

On February 3, 2019, Najib, the former prime minister, claimed trial to the three charges of money laundering by allegedly accepting illegal proceeds amounting to RM27 million through his three AmPrivate Banking accounts at AmIslamic Bank Berhad on July 8, 2014. He was charged under Section 4 (1) (a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001, which carries a maximum penalty of a RM5 million fine or imprisonment of up to five years, or both upon conviction.

Najib is currently serving a jail term in Kajang Prison for misappropriating RM42 million in the SRC International funds case. On September 2, 2022, he filed a petition for a royal pardon, leading to the Pardons Board reducing his jail term from 12 to six years and lowering the fine from RM210 million to RM50 million on January 29.
