Melaka: Despite being diagnosed with Marfan syndrome and scoliosis, Politeknik Merlimau Melaka (PMM) Diploma in Electronic Engineering (Computer) graduate Muhammad Akmal Yazali, 22, has proven that his physical limitations are no obstacle to achieving academic excellence. Akmal, who was also actively involved in various innovation competitions throughout his studies, successfully completed his diploma with an excellent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Marfan syndrome is a rare genetic disorder, while scoliosis is a condition involving a curvature of the spine. His condition has limited his participation in activities requiring physical strength, as well as affected his emotional stability. "Although my condition is not perfect compared with other students, it has never dampened my determination to work hard. The prayers and support of my parents, as well as the encouragement from my brother and fellow friends, have helped me succeed to this day," he said here.
The Melaka-born graduate will pursue his Bachelor's degree at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). A total of 1,195 PMM graduates received their respective diplomas at the 24th PMM Convocation, which was held in three sessions beginning yesterday and ending today.
PMM Deputy Director (Academic) Faridatuljana Mohd Noor said this year's convocation was more special than previous ones following PMM's recognition as a Premier Polytechnic, as well as being the first convocation held outside the campus, bringing together all polytechnics and community colleges in the Southern Zone. "After all the sessions are completed, PMM is expected to have a total of 32,766 graduates, demonstrating the continuity of its role in providing relevant and competitive technical and vocational education and training (TVET)."
Faridatuljana further added, "By 2027, PMM will offer two Bachelor's degree programmes based on Work-Based Learning, namely the Bachelor of Electronic Engineering Technology in Sustainable Intelligence and the Bachelor of Business Analytics."
