Malaysia’s Total Trade Hits RM272.4 Bln In January 2026, Exports Led By Penang

Malaysia: Malaysia's total trade in January 2026 reached RM272.4 billion, with exports and imports recorded at RM146.9 billion and RM125.5 billion, respectively, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chief Statistician Malaysia, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, stated that exports saw a significant increase of RM24.1 billion, or 19.6 percent, year-on-year to RM146.9 billion. The surge in exports was primarily driven by higher shipments from Pulau Pinang, contributing RM22.1 billion. Other states that saw an increase in exports included Johor with RM5.7 billion, Kuala Lumpur with RM736.4 million, Perak with RM373.2 million, Negeri Sembilan with RM60.5 million, and Perlis with RM5.7 million.

Conversely, exports experienced declines in several regions, with Melaka and Kedah both seeing a drop of RM1.5 billion. Terengganu's exports decreased by RM549.3 million, Pahang by RM389.8 million, Selangor by RM339.1 million, Labuan by RM212.3 million, Sarawak by RM293.8 million, Sabah by RM82.8 million, and Kelantan by RM51.7 million. Pulau Pinang continued to be Malaysia's top exporting state, holding a 44.2 percent share of the market, followed by Johor at 19.7 percent, Selangor at 14.2 percent, Sarawak at 6.1 percent, and Kuala Lumpur at 3.5 percent.

On the import side, Dr Mohd Uzir highlighted a 5.3 percent growth in January 2026, equating to an increase of RM6.3 billion compared to January 2025. The rise in imports was led by Pulau Pinang with RM3.7 billion, followed by Selangor with RM2.0 billion, Melaka with RM1.3 billion, Kuala Lumpur with RM846.0 million, Kedah with RM772.0 million, Perak with RM236.3 million, Sarawak with RM76.2 million, Negeri Sembilan with RM161.1 million, and Labuan with RM3.0 million.

However, certain states experienced a decline in imports: Johor saw a reduction of RM1.8 billion, Pahang decreased by RM192.5 million, Sabah by RM71.5 million, Perlis by RM41.9 million, Kelantan by RM26.4 million, and Terengganu by RM1.5 million. Pulau Pinang accounted for 25.8 percent of Malaysia's imports, followed by Selangor at 25.1 percent, Johor at 21.7 percent, Kuala Lumpur at 8.7 percent, and Kedah at 5.6 percent.
