Nagoya:The momentum of the Malaysian contingent at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games continues to grow as the sixth day of competition sees several sports entering decisive phases, opening up greater opportunities for the country ahead of the games' climax. According to BERNAMA News Agency, the focus over the past two days was directed more towards securing gold. The stage of struggle for national athletes was largely adorned with stories of resilience and endurance, keeping opportunities wide open. In the sepaktakraw arena, the Malaysian team staged a significant comeback by defeating Indonesia 2-1 in the semifinal, securing a spot in the final against defending champions Thailand. This success has rekindled Malaysia's dream of ending a 36-year wait for gold in this event, last achieved at the Beijing 1990 Asian Games. On the athletics track, Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi ensured representation in the podium contention by advancing to the men's 100-meter semifinals, emerging as the fastest in the fifth heat w ith a time of 10.17 seconds. In squash, Malaysia's representatives progressed to the quarterfinals, maintaining their pursuit of medals. Meanwhile, in men's hockey, Malaysia continued its excellent form in Group B by defeating Thailand 10-0, achieving a third consecutive win without conceding a goal. However, the day also had its setbacks. Muhammad Irfan Shamsuddin, the nation's discus throwing ace, was unable to perform at his best with a throw of 56.37 meters, which was insufficient to place him in the top eight. As a result, the athletics camp must wait for its first medal at these games, with focus now shifting to upcoming events. Tomorrow promises another major test for the national contingent, particularly in the sepaktakraw final against Thailand and the 100m semifinal featuring Muhammad Azeem.
