Nagoya:Malaysia ended their 36-year wait for the Asian Games sepak takraw men's team regu gold medal by defeating Thailand 2-0 in the final at the Aichi-Nagoya edition held at the Poloma Mizuho Arena.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysia last claimed gold in this event at the 1990 Games in Beijing, also against Thailand. The team's successful strategy involved fielding their main regu of Mohammad Syahir Mohd Rosdi, Farhan Adam, and Mohamad Azlan Alias, who triumphed over the Thai team of Marukin Phanmakon, Phutawan Sopa, and Pornthep Tinbangbon with scores of 15-9, 5-15, 15-11.
Following this victory, Malaysia's second regu, consisting of Zulkifli Abd Razak, Muhammad Afifuddin Mohd Razali, and Aidil Aiman Azwawi, continued the winning momentum. They defeated the Thai trio of Kritsanapong Nontakote, Tanaphon Sapyen, and Wuttinu Kamsanor with scores of 15-13, 15-10, securing Malaysia's fourth gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asiad.
National players Syahir and Azlan expressed their emotions after the victory, highlighting the challenges, including player injuries, they faced before the Games. Syahir acknowledged the strength granted to them, while Azlan spoke of the unexpected nature of their win against Thailand, particularly considering the team's injury struggles.
Azlan remarked on the significance of the win, noting the long wait for Malaysia to reclaim the top spot. He emphasized the importance of staying focused as they prepare for the upcoming regu event in the Asiad, despite having a major collection of titles including achievements at the World Cup and SEA Games.
