Kuala lumpur: Malaysia's economy remained resilient as preliminary data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) showed that its gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 5.8 per cent in the second quarter of 2026. Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir noted that the figure was higher than the 5.4 per cent recorded in the first quarter of this year, demonstrating that the country's economic activity continued to expand despite geopolitical pressures.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Economy Minister mentioned that the 5.8 per cent growth, following the first quarter's 5.4 per cent, indicates the strength and resilience of Malaysia's economy. He emphasized that this growth also reflects the effectiveness of governmental interventions in mitigating disruptions to economic activities amid geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East.
Earlier, in its advance GDP estimates for the second quarter, DOSM reported that Malaysia's economy expanded by 5.8 per cent, with growth across nearly all economic sectors except for agriculture, which experienced a contraction. Akmal Nasrullah highlighted the role of the government's strategies in managing the impact of geopolitical tensions on oil supplies and prices.
Akmal Nasrullah further elaborated on the government's efforts through the National Economic Action Council (MTEN), which meets weekly to assess and respond to ongoing developments. Key decisions have focused on ensuring uninterrupted oil supply, managing prices to prevent excessive public burden, and implementing measures to support industries facing supply chain disruptions.
The minister expressed gratitude for the absence of supply chain disruptions and reiterated the importance of managing prices to alleviate public burden. He acknowledged the success of interventions in preventing industry shutdowns due to supply disruptions.
While celebrating the encouraging GDP growth, Akmal Nasrullah urged caution, highlighting the persistent uncertainty in West Asia, which could escalate rapidly. He stressed the importance of vigilance in facing potential challenges.
Additionally, the minister emphasized the significance of equitable economic growth, ensuring that benefits extend to small businesses and Bumiputera entrepreneurs. He called for sustained economic growth to bolster confidence and unlock Malaysia's potential, highlighting the need for inclusive opportunities that benefit all segments of society.
