Malaysia’s E-Invoice System Hits One Billion Transactions Milestone

Kuala lumpur: The implementation of the e-invoice system in Malaysia has recorded over one billion transactions to date, with participation from over 200,000 taxpayers nationwide, according to the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRB).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, IRB chief executive officer Datuk Abu Tariq Jamaluddin stated that more than 135,000 taxpayers have started submitting e-invoices, including phase four taxpayers and new taxpayers. He noted that the level of compliance and acceptance regarding the implementation of the e-invoice system is very good, with over 90 percent of companies or businesses from phases one to three already implementing e-invoices according to the prescribed timeline.

Abu Tariq highlighted that despite initial challenges in developing or amending business systems and adapting business policies and operations, the successful implementation proves e-invoicing is feasible. The IRB is committed to intensifying its review and engagement activities with companies or businesses that have yet to implement the e-invoice system, providing appropriate assistance and advisory services through notification letters, gentle reminders, and visits.

He clarified that e-invoicing is not a new tax mechanism or implementation, countering common misinterpretations. E-invoicing transforms business documentation from manual to digital, detailing existing sales and service tax information. The implementation benefits the entire Malaysian business ecosystem, empowering SMEs to remain competitive and professional, while digitalizing operations and strengthening digital service infrastructure.

Abu Tariq emphasized the replacement of traditional, manual business methods with e-invoices, eliminating the need for physical business records and reducing risks associated with manual record keeping. He dismissed claims that the e-invoice system causes businesses to pay higher taxes, noting that businesses with annual income or sales of RM1 million or less are temporarily exempt from mandatory implementation but are encouraged to adopt it voluntarily.

To facilitate the transition, the IRB offers free platforms such as MyInvois Portal, MyInvois Mobile App, and MyInvois e-Pos, along with various assistance channels and support services. This includes e-invoice guidelines, FAQs, reference materials, free briefings, and webinars nationwide.
