Melaka: Malaysia's experience in managing religious, cultural, and ethnic diversity is a valuable example for the global community in promoting interfaith understanding, peace, and social harmony, as highlighted by Minister of National Unity Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang. He emphasized that Malaysia's strategy is founded on recognizing diversity not as a source of division but as a strength to be harnessed through mutual respect, openness, and cooperation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Aaron shared these insights during the International Interfaith Peace Conference (IIPC) 2026. The conference, themed 'Melaka and Malaysia as a Meeting Point of Faith, Culture, Diversity and Harmony Towards Cohesive Nation Building', served as a significant platform for religious leaders, policymakers, and civil society representatives worldwide to exchange ideas and foster collaboration in the pursuit of peace and social harmony. The event was inaugurated by Melaka Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Dr Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, with notable attendees such as Prof Dr Hamed Abdulaziz Al-Marwani, Datuk Dr Abdul Razak Ahmad, and Dr Muhammad Gharawi.
Aaron further clarified that interfaith dialogue is not intended to blur theological distinctions or create religious uniformity but is aimed at fostering accurate understanding among different faith communities. He stressed that interfaith dialogue is about building mutual understanding while respecting differences without compromising religious principles.
The minister stated that the goal of interfaith dialogue is not to achieve theological consensus or arrive at final binding decisions. Instead, it seeks to provide a platform for the dissemination of accurate information, knowledge sharing, and the exchange of best practices. This approach helps dispel misconceptions, reduce prejudice, and strengthen mutual respect among diverse faith groups.
Aaron highlighted the significance of these engagements in empowering young individuals to become community bridge-builders, encouraging collaboration between religious leaders and the government, and reinforcing their shared responsibility in advancing nation-building. He noted that the importance of interfaith dialogue has been underscored by his participation in recent events like the Harmony Symposium, World Religious Leaders Conference, and the Roundtable Discussion on Multi-Faith Partnerships in Praxis for Human Flourishing and Dignity.
Despite the varied themes and participants, Aaron observed that these engagements share the common goal of uniting people through dialogue and enhancing mutual understanding through the sharing of interfaith information, emphasizing why interfaith dialogue remains as relevant today as ever.
