Malaysians Urged to Follow Legal Procedures for Marriages in Thailand

Songkhla:Malaysians planning to marry in southern Thailand are advised to enter the country through legal channels and with valid travel documents to secure a confirmation letter from the Malaysian Consulate General in Songkhla.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysia's Consul General in Songkhla, Ahmad Fahmi Ahmad Sarkawi, emphasized that entering Thailand illegally through unauthorized routes would prevent the consulate from issuing the necessary confirmation letter due to violations of Thai immigration laws.

The confirmation letter from the consulate is crucial for legal proceedings related to registering the marriage in Malaysia. Ahmad Fahmi noted that while not many couples are affected, some have requested confirmation but were denied due to immigration offenses, complicating the consulate's ability to provide assistance.

He urged Malaysians to respect Thai laws and understand the importance of complying with legal entry requirements. This reminder was given during a visit by the Perlis Journalists Association (PWP) to the consulate.

Additionally, Ahmad Fahmi mentioned that approximately 70 Malaysians are currently imprisoned in southern Thailand, primarily in Narathiwat, with most cases related to drug offenses.
