Malaysians Urged to Embrace Togetherness for Stronger National Identity

Kuala Lampur:Strengthening the national identity of Malaysia requires its citizens to build genuine togetherness, embrace cultural foundations, and master the national language, experts suggest.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prof Datuk Dr. Sivamurugan Pandian from Universiti Sains Malaysia emphasized the need for Malaysians to break down prejudices and stereotypes to recognize the nation's diversity as a shared strength. Speaking at the Negara Bangsa Dialogue: Building National Identity and Character program, he stressed the importance of not only interacting but also coming together to build a sense of belonging and shared values as responsible citizens.

Sivamurugan also introduced the K.I.T.A. framework to promote sustainable unity, which includes Kebersamaan (togetherness) in diversity, Inklusiviti (inclusivity) through national identity, Tanggungjawab (responsibility) based on tolerance and acceptance, and Aspirasi (aspiration) grounded in integrity. He highlighted that while Malaysians have diverse ethnic backgrounds, their commitment to a harmonious future should be a common goal.

Prof Datuk Dr. Teo Kok Seong from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia added that national identity must be rooted in Malaysia's historical foundations. He noted that the framework for national culture, outlined in the 1971 National Cultural Policy and continued under the National Cultural Policy (DAKEN) 2021, recognizes Malay culture and Islamic teachings as the core, while also accepting appropriate cultural elements from other communities.

Teo emphasized the responsibility of every citizen to uphold the national identity, including mastering the national language, Malay. He stated that proficiency in Malay is essential as it is the national and official language, and also the main medium of instruction in the education system. He questioned the meaning of citizenship for those unable to speak the national language.
