Kuala lumpur: National badminton great Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei emphasized the need for Malaysia's national shuttlers to exhibit greater hunger and determination to make a substantial impact on the international stage, despite possessing the talent necessary for success.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Performance Committee Chairman pointed out a noticeable difference in mentality between Malaysian players and the fighting spirit demonstrated by French players. This observation comes in light of France's recent success in securing two world titles in New Delhi. Chong Wei remarked on the unexpected victory by the French, stating that it serves as a reminder for Malaysian players to showcase their potential and work towards improvement.

French badminton has been making significant strides internationally, reaching new heights by clinching its inaugural world titles in men's singles and mixed doubles on the same day. Alex Lanier made history as the first French player to win the men's singles world title, while Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue captured the mixed doubles crown. Additionally, the French men's team claimed silver at the Thomas Cup Finals 2026 in Denmark.

Chong Wei specifically addressed the challenges faced by Malaysia's top-ranked men's singles player, Leong Jun Hao. He underscored the necessity for a shift in attitude and a heightened personal desire, highlighting the limited time the 27-year-old has to leave a mark on the international badminton scene.

Leong Jun Hao's prospects for a final Olympic bid in 2028 hinge on his condition, according to Chong Wei. He stressed the importance of discipline as a fundamental pillar of success, emphasizing that no player can achieve world-level recognition based solely on talent without it.
