Tanjung Balai:The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have denied reports from a local newspaper and social media about the arrest of a Malaysian university student for smuggling over four kilogrammes of syabu in Tanjung Balai, Indonesia, on October 10.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan clarified that the individual arrested by Indonesian authorities is a 21-year-old Indonesian man. The suspect, originating from Medan, is a student at an Indonesian higher learning institution.
Investigations revealed that the drugs were sourced from a syndicate in Malaysia before being smuggled out. The drugs were allegedly handed over by another Indonesian individual in the Klang Valley to be transported to Indonesia via the Tanjung Balai Ferry Terminal.
The suspect was apprehended by Tanjung Balai Police (POLRES) at 5 pm local time on October 10, upon his arrival at the Teluk Nibung Ferry Terminal in Tanjung Balai, after traveling from Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. An X-ray scan of his luggage uncovered eight plastic packets suspected of containing methamphetamine, totaling 4.044 kilogrammes.
Hussein emphasized that the report titled "Lagi kes rakyat Malaysia ditahan, pelajar universiti 'kantoi' seludup 4kg syabu" is false and could potentially cause public confusion and concern. He urged parties to refrain from disseminating unverified news and to seek confirmation from authorities first.
The NCID is committed to combating cross-border smuggling and will maintain collaboration with the Indonesian National Police (POLRI) to gather intelligence, identify supply sources, and dismantle drug syndicate networks connected to Malaysia. The public is encouraged to report any information regarding the case to the NCID hotline at 012-208 7222.
