FRIM’s Santuni MADANI Initiative to Boost Bukit Lagong Orang Asli Community

Gombak:The Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) is intensifying its efforts to enhance the socioeconomic status of the Orang Asli community in Kampung Bukit Lagong through its Santuni MADANI Program. This initiative focuses on infrastructure development, job creation, and the preservation of traditional heritage.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, FRIM Director General Datuk Dr Ismail Parlan emphasized that selecting this village, inhabited by the Temuan ethnic community, as FRIM's Kampung Santuni MADANI reflects a commitment to the well-being of the local residents. The community contributes to protecting the Bukit Lagong Forest Reserve from encroachment.

The village, which had only four families in 2000, now comprises 148 residents from 44 families. The community is exploring new income sources such as vegetable gardens, aquaponic farming, and handicraft production, alongside traditional forest produce.

FRIM has facilitated community development by providing Starlink satellite internet, a freezer, a sound system, a lawnmower, and painting equipment. It collaborates with local leaders and youths on the Traditional Knowledge Documentation Project, documenting 42 plant species for various uses.

The Santuni MADANI Program also fosters cultural ties through events like the traditional sewang dance and community programs during Ramadan. FRIM supports job creation by hiring residents as staff and nature guides and has assisted in infrastructure projects like the village archway.

The program, approved by the Cabinet in 2024, aims to tackle socioeconomic challenges, including poverty, educational dropouts, and unemployment, through cooperative efforts between leaders and residents.
