Malaysian Plantation Firms Cleared of Involvement in Indonesian Fires

Accra:No Malaysian plantation companies were involved in burning activities in Indonesia, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil stated.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad confirmed this during a Cabinet meeting, following cross-checks by the ministry. Fahmi reported that the fires occurred outside the oil palm concessions owned by Malaysian companies. In one instance, a fire spread from outside into a Malaysian-owned plantation, which has since been extinguished. The affected area was five hectares.

Fahmi, who also serves as the MADANI Government spokesman, mentioned that the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) plans to conduct a special engagement session with all Malaysian plantation companies operating in Indonesia. This comes as recurring forest and land fires in Indonesia continue to be a regional concern, with transboundary haze affecting neighboring countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines.
