Kuala Lumpur: Reciprocal tariff negotiations with the United States are actively underway, with strong support for local industries and the exploration of new export markets, said the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. He highlighted that the US tariff presents a significant challenge, but Malaysia will not remain passive in addressing it.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Tengku Zafrul emphasized the commitment of the MADANI government to protect the country’s economy. He assured that the government is actively fighting for the interests of the people and industries, stating this commitment via X (formerly Twitter).
The Dewan Rakyat held a special sitting today to discuss the US tariff issue, followed by a press conference where Tengku Zafrul informed the media that tariff negotiations are set to commence tomorrow. The primary goal of these negotiations is to achieve a zero tariff for Malaysia.
In recent developments, Tengku Zafrul led a high-level delegation to Washington DC on April 24 to engage with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
