Malaysia to Boost Exports of High-Value Palm Oil Products to India

Mumbai:Malaysia is aiming to increase exports of high-value palm oil products to India, tapping into the ongoing strong demand for vegetable oil in the country. According to BERNAMA News Agency, India imported over 2.26 million tonnes of Malaysian palm oil, representing nearly 18% of Malaysia's total production. This marks a 40% increase compared to the same period in 2025, as stated by Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad. Minister Noraini, attending an industry conference in Mumbai, emphasized that Malaysia's strategy extends beyond merely increasing crude palm oil exports. The focus is also on expanding trade in high-value products like oleochemicals, specialty fats, food ingredients, and personal-care products. Malaysia is also exploring opportunities for enhanced bilateral cooperation with India, especially in the context of India's National Mission on Edible Oils - Oil Palm. Malaysia's century-long experience in the oil palm value chain positions it well to share expertise and support India's cultivation efforts through private-sector collaboration. The ministry, along with the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), is actively engaging with Indian manufacturers, refiners, and industry associations. They are also in dialogue with the Indian government to ensure a stable trading environment beneficial to both nations. India relies heavily on imports for about two-thirds of its vegetable oil needs, with its total imports, including soyoil and sunflower oil, reaching over 11.2 million tonnes by August this year. Minister Noraini noted that Malaysia's palm oil sector has remained resilient, with production reaching 12.6 million tonnes in the first eight months of 2026. The full-year production is projected at around 19.7 million tonnes, and exports are expected to reach approximately 16 million tonnes. The minister also highlighted the challenges posed by global geopolitical issues, which have increased freight, energy, and insurance costs, disrupted shipping routes, and caused pri ce volatility. Despite these challenges, Malaysia maintains a strong position as a reliable palm oil supplier, supported by its established production base and mature supply chain.
