FAM to Discuss Citizenship Status of Heritage Players with Home Minister

Kuala Lampur:The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) is set to meet with the Home Minister to address the passport and citizenship issues of seven heritage players involved in a document falsification case.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, FAM President Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan emphasized the need for this meeting to obtain clarification from the Home Ministry, as citizenship and passport issuance are beyond FAM's scope. He stated that the association intends to work closely with the ministry to find a viable solution.

The seven players are currently ineligible to represent Malaysia due to a FIFA decision preventing them from playing for the national team. Ab Ghani expressed regret over the document falsification issue and assured Malaysian football fans that such incidents would not happen again during his presidency.

On September 26, 2025, FIFA confirmed that FAM and the players had breached Article 22 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which pertains to document falsification. Investigations revealed that FAM had submitted falsified documents to support the players' eligibility for the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers against Vietnam, a match Malaysia won 4-0.

Consequently, FAM was fined CHF350,000 (approximately RM1.8 million), and each player received a CHF2,000 fine (around RM11,000) and a 12-month suspension from all football-related activities.

In related developments, the FAM meeting saw the appointment of chairmen and deputy chairmen for 11 standing committees. These appointments are part of the new leadership's efforts to streamline FAM's administration and enhance the effectiveness of football management and development in the country.
