Malaysia Secures Gold and Silver in Sepak Takraw at Asian Games

Nagoya:Paloma Mizuho Arena Despite falling short of a double-gold victory, Malaysia's national tekong, Mohammad Syahir Mohd Rosdi, expressed pride in achieving a gold and a silver medal at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, marking one of the highlights of his career.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Syahir, together with teammates Mohamad Azlan Alias and Aidil Aiman Azwawi, earned a silver medal after losing to Thailand's Kritsanapong Nontakote, Wuttinun Kamsanor, and Tanaphon Sapyen with scores of 9-15, 8-15 in the regu event final. This victory allowed Thailand to retain the title, thwarting Malaysia's hopes for two gold medals in the tournament.

Syahir noted the significance of this achievement compared to his previous Asian Games appearances, where he had only won silver medals. He regarded the shift from silver to gold as a major career accomplishment. Malaysia's victory last Friday in the team regu event ended a 36-year gold drought in the Asian Games, with their last win in the event dating back to the 1990 Beijing Games.

Although the team aimed to replicate the double-gold success from the 1990 Beijing Games, where Malaysia secured both the team regu and regu events, they were unable to do so due to Thailand's precise and disciplined performance. Syahir recognized the need for improvements, particularly in the team's mental approach against Thailand, but was pleased with their overall effort and strategy.
