Bandung:Malaysia is set to face Singapore in their final FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 Division 1 Group A match this Thursday, despite a demanding schedule. Interim head coach Tan Cheng Hoe expressed confidence in his team's readiness following their recent performances.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysia's team, known as Harimau Malaya, has gained significant confidence and experience from their two opening matches. This includes a goalless draw with hosts Indonesia at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
Cheng Hoe anticipates a challenging match against Singapore at Stadium Si Jalak Harupat, with the final race still wide open. He acknowledged the difficulty of the upcoming "Causeway derby" but emphasized the team's preparedness after their positive result against Indonesia.
The coach highlighted the importance of recovery and preparation for Malaysia, especially after two physically demanding matches and travel to Bandung. He stated that assessing the players' fitness would be crucial before deciding on the starting line-up for the Singapore clash.
Cheng Hoe also noted that the established chemistry among Johor Darul Ta'zim players in the national team provides an advantage, but he stressed the need for a collective team performance. Malaysia currently leads Group A with four points, tied with Indonesia but ahead on goal difference. Singapore is third with three points, while Bangladesh is in last place without any points.
In this inaugural tournament, the group winners will advance to the final, and the runners-up will compete in the third-place playoff, with both matches scheduled at Gelora Bung Karno next Monday.
