Malaysia Pledges to Propel Digital Economy Framework as ASEAN Chair

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia, under the leadership of Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, is set to spearhead the implementation of the Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) as this year’s ASEAN chair. Gobind emphasized the significance of the agreement, citing its potential to elevate the regional digital economy to an estimated value of US$2 trillion by 2030.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Gobind highlighted the importance of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s amicable relations with ASEAN leaders, which could expedite reaching a consensus on the DEFA. This diplomatic rapport is crucial for resolving preliminary issues and facilitating the agreement’s swift execution, benefiting Malaysia and the region economically.

Gobind further elaborated on the DEFA’s objectives, which include fostering a dynamic digital economy ecosystem through infrastructure development, e-commerce implementation, cybersecurity, digital payment technologies, and digital transformation policies such as e-invoicing. Despite longstanding discussions, challenges persist due to varying levels of digital readiness among ASEAN countries.

“Some countries excel in specific areas, while others require more time to develop internet connectivity and a robust digital ecosystem,” Gobind remarked. As ASEAN chair, Malaysia aims to devise mechanisms that allow digitally prepared countries to advance while others enhance their capacity.

Described as the world’s pioneering regional digital economy agreement, DEFA seeks to propel ASEAN into a leading digital economy, bolstering digital cooperation and fostering regional integration and inclusive growth.

Gobind also underscored the role of the ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting (ADGMIN) in fortifying digital collaboration. The forum facilitates discussions on current challenges and the development of action plans for the digital future, addressing issues such as cross-border online scams and the proliferation of fake information within the regional digital ecosystem.

Highlighting the urgency of tackling digital crime, Gobind advocated for a robust communication and collaborative framework among ASEAN countries to safeguard digital platform users. The meeting also addressed the imperative of information accuracy, emphasizing the need for verified, authentic, and reviewed data to ensure informed decision-making in business, governance, and daily life.
