Kuching: The 2026 Malaysia Day Celebration Exhibition will offer an in-depth look into the history of Malaysia's formation at the Main Atrium of Plaza Merdeka, Kuching, Sarawak. This exhibition will run from Thursday until September 16 under the theme 'Corridor of Time of Malaysia's Formation'.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Erwin Khairul Ahmad, director-general of the Information Department (JAPEN), announced that the exhibition will operate from 10 am to 10 pm. It will feature a pavilion showcasing a large-scale gallery tracing Malaysia's formation to the current day. The exhibition will be divided into five main sections: the Malaysia Formation Timeline, Malaysia Formation Documents, the Malaysia Formation Committee and Commission, the Leaders Gallery, and the Nationhood Gallery focusing on Malaysian identity.
Erwin noted that many individuals may not have previously seen the historical documents on display, which are crucial references for the Malaysia Day celebrations. The event is co-organized with several entities, including the Sarawak Public Communications Unit, the National Archives of Malaysia's Sarawak branch, the Sabah State Archives Department, and the Sarawak Museum Department.
In addition to the main exhibition, smaller pop-up exhibitions will be held across all 10 divisions of Sarawak. A mini exhibition will also take place at IOI Mall Putrajaya and various locations in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah. Activities such as quizzes, Kahoot games, Pocket Talk sessions, and cultural performances will accompany these exhibitions.
The celebration will also include an interfaith thanksgiving ceremony on September 14 at a hotel in Kuching, followed by another ceremony at Masjid Jamek Kuching on September 15. The main Malaysia Day event will occur on September 16 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).
Erwin explained that this year's celebrations are set in Sarawak as part of a rotation system, demonstrating the government's commitment to fostering unity and integration among Sarawak, Sabah, and Peninsular Malaysia. The highlight will be an opening performance themed 'Sarawak Maju Makmur Segulai Sejalai', along with traditional performances such as silat, Hadrah, gendang pampat, and lion dance.
Local Sarawak artistes, alongside popular Malaysian performers like Dayang Nurfaizah, Faizal Tahir, and Stacy, will blend traditional and contemporary elements in their performances. The signing of the Malaysia Day Special Book by prominent leaders, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, will also be a significant event.
Erwin anticipates an attendance of 5,000 to 6,000 guests at BCCK, with nationwide audiences able to join via RTM's live broadcast and other media channels. He emphasized that Malaysia Day 2026 in Sarawak aims to celebrate unity and togetherness, essential for the country's progress.
