Shanghai:Malaysia concluded its campaign at the 48th WorldSkills Competition (WSC) Shanghai 2026 on a successful note, securing one bronze medal and 13 Medals for Excellence across various technical and vocational skill categories.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, undergraduate student Sia Xin Wan, aged 21, won the bronze medal in the Software Testing category and also received the Best of Nation medal for Malaysia at the Shanghai World Expo Cultural Centre.
Sia, a student at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), expressed immense pride and gratitude for his achievement, dedicating his victory to his family, mentors, institution, and country. He shared his joy and gratitude after the closing ceremony, thanking everyone who supported him on his journey.
In addition to the bronze medal, Malaysia's performance was bolstered by 13 competitors who achieved the prestigious Medal for Excellence by meeting high international benchmark standards in their respective disciplines.
Notable among the recipients was Muhammad Haziq Lailla Zamri, 22, an Electrical Installations competitor from Batu Pahat, Johor, who expressed immense satisfaction with his eighth-place finish out of 36 global competitors. Muhamad Nashrul Zulkifli, 22, representing Digital Construction from Ayer Hitam, Johor, described his experience as humbling while competing against top global talents.
Bakery competitor Herman Wong Xiu Hong, 20, from Miri, Sarawak, and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning competitor Muhammad Amir Fitri Mohd Sefulrizam, 21, from Kuala Nerang, Kedah, both expressed pride in elevating Malaysia's profile on the global stage. Electronics competitor Amirul Sharif Sharifudin, 22, from Selangor, voiced satisfaction with his overall performance and shared his ambition to further his studies in electronics engineering.
The other recipients of the Medal for Excellence were Angellin Ai Pian (Beauty Therapy), Grace Ong Yi Mei (Cooking), Wan Nur Amilya Wan Zolkarnaini (Hairdressing), Muhammad Huzairy Mohamad Thes (Mechanical Engineering CAD), Muhammad Ammar Azli (Welding), Lam Kar Chun (3D Digital Game Arts), Nadratulliyana Ab Malek (Fashion Technology), and Wan Hamiz Ozai Wan Hamidzi (Rail Vehicle Technology).
The WSC Shanghai 2026 featured the Malaysian contingent of 22 participants competing in 21 skill segments under the supervision of the Department of Skills Development and the Works Ministry. The tournament, held from September 22 to 27, brought together 1,400 skilled young professionals from over 65 countries and regions, showcasing 64 skill areas.
