Malaysia and United Kingdom Strengthen Green Transport Partnership

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia and the United Kingdom are enhancing their collaboration to develop a more sustainable and integrated transport system in Malaysia.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, British High Commissioner to Malaysia Ajay Sharma emphasized the growing bilateral relationship driven by a shared commitment to address climate change.

'Drawing from decades of green transport policy development, institutional reform and operational expertise, the UK has proven industry experience in designing, managing and optimising multimodal transport systems that support sustainable urban development," Sharma stated. He highlighted the UK's readiness to support Malaysia's efforts in scaling up low-carbon public transport, accelerating electrification, and embedding sustainability in urban development.

The inaugural UK-Malaysia Green Transport Dialogue, held in Kuala Lumpur, served as a platform for discussions on policy approaches, planning frameworks, technological innovation, and operational best practices. Organized by the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, the Ministry of Transport Malaysia, and the Malaysia Rail Development Corporation, the dialogue took place over two days, from February 10 to 11.

The event gathered policymakers, transport authorities, and industry leaders from both nations, including Ajay Sharma and Dr. Siti Muhaza Sheikh Zainal, the Ministry of Transport's division secretary of the strategic and international planning division. Experts from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's Green Cities, Infrastructure and Energy Programme, along with representatives from Transport for London, Crossrail International, and Connected Places Catapult, shared insights from the UK's experience in sustainable transport solutions.

The dialogue also featured UK companies skilled in integrated transport governance, transit-oriented development, first- and last-mile connectivity, sustainable rail development, modern tram design, bus network optimisation, and financing. Building on this inaugural event, both countries will continue to explore how shared expertise can support Malaysia's long-term goal of achieving an integrated and sustainable transport system.
