Putrajaya: Malaysia and Singapore are advancing their collaborative efforts in the energy sector, with a particular emphasis on renewable energy, to enhance regional resilience and sustainability. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who also serves as the Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) Minister, engaged in discussions with Tan See Leng, Singapore's Minister for Manpower and Minister-in-charge of Energy, at Menara PETRA in Putrajaya today.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the conversation addressed the impact of ongoing crises in West Asia on global supply chains and the challenges faced by ASEAN. Tan acknowledged Malaysia's initiatives to bolster energy security through the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) and underscored the necessity for ASEAN member states to commit to achieving a more secure energy future in Southeast Asia.
Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir highlighted that both nations are pushing forward with the implementation of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), exploring cooperation in green technologies, particularly carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS). This topic was discussed in a meeting with Tan at the Economy Ministry today, emphasizing the initiative's role as a 'game changer' in enhancing economic complexity in both countries.
Akmal Nasrullah noted that Singapore continues to be Malaysia's most significant ASEAN trading partner, with total trade from January to October 2025 reaching RM339.39 billion, reflecting substantial economic potential. The meeting further delved into potential partnerships in green technologies through CCUS, as well as the preparedness of Malaysia and Singapore in addressing global energy challenges due to tensions in West Asia.
He expressed optimism that strategic cooperation would lead to mutual benefits, translating into enhanced economic and career opportunities for the youth in Johor Bahru and Malaysia at large.
