Ipoh: Weil Hotel in Ipoh, Perak, has been officially recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) as the first environmental, social, and governance (ESG)-certified hotel in Malaysia, marking a significant achievement in the country's hospitality industry landscape.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the hotel's managing director Liew Yu-Wei stated that the recognition reflects Weil Hotel's continued commitment to strengthening the implementation of ESG principles across all levels of its operations. Liew emphasized that the recognition is not merely about being first, but about the responsibility to continue growing, operating, and contributing meaningfully to the future of the local hospitality industry. He stressed the importance of ESG not just as a necessity, but as a foundational element in shaping operations that are more responsible, resilient, and have a positive impact on the environment and community.
Liew conveyed these sentiments to reporters following the certificate presentation ceremony, held in conjunction with Weil Hotel being named the 'National Record Holder of the First ESG-Certified Hotel.' Liew received the recognition from MBOR representative Megat Faris Megat Muzaffar Shah during the ceremony, which was attended by approximately 100 invited guests from government agencies, tourism authorities, and industry players.
Furthermore, Liew noted that, aside from the MBOR recognition, Weil Hotel also made history as the first hotel in Malaysia to receive ESG certification under a programme led by the Malaysian Association of Hotels. This programme was conducted in collaboration with SGS Malaysia and Saimatrix Integrated and was supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, in November last year. In addition, the hotel was awarded the first LEED Gold O+M certification in Malaysia by the US Green Building Council in the same month, further strengthening its commitment to global sustainability standards.
