Kuala lumpur: The government is actively working to ensure that Malaysia's energy supply security can be maintained until December, amid a global supply crisis that has disrupted economic chains and increased energy costs. This announcement was made by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who also serves as the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fadillah stated that the country's current energy supply is expected to last until July. However, efforts are underway to extend this by sourcing additional supplies from abroad. He emphasized that Petronas, Malaysia's national oil and gas company, is making significant efforts to secure these supplies, even reaching out to African nations. If successful, this could ensure the country's energy supply security until December.
Fadillah highlighted that the global energy crisis is having widespread effects on the economic chain, particularly impacting the logistics sector with rising costs that ultimately affect the prices of goods and supply security. The crisis has also extended its impact to other sectors such as healthcare and manufacturing, where shortages of certain raw materials like plastic are being experienced.
He noted that within Malaysia, there is a sense of complacency, as the crisis's effects are not immediately apparent. However, he assured that many parties are diligently working to maintain the country's current state of comfort. He urged all parties to contribute by conserving electricity and water to reduce energy consumption, which could help extend the duration of the energy supply and ensure its security.
The government is also taking proactive measures through the National Economic Action Council, which holds weekly meetings to assess the crisis's impact on the national economy and discuss potential intervention strategies. These efforts aim to ensure the continuity of small and medium enterprises, prevent job losses, and mitigate the impact on the population.
Fadillah reiterated the government's commitment to prioritizing three main aspects of the energy sector: supply security, affordable pricing for citizens, and environmental sustainability.
