Accra:Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong expressed a desire for more local digital creative companies to develop their own intellectual property, build successful franchises, and expand into international markets.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the minister emphasized the importance of translating Malaysia's creative talent and cultural diversity into globally competitive products, companies, and high-value jobs. He delivered these remarks during his keynote speech at the opening ceremony of LEVEL UP KL 2026.
The Digital Creative Ecosystem Roadmap aims to position Malaysia as a global digital creative hub with a focus on empowering human capital, strengthening intellectual property commercialisation and financing, attracting high-value investments, and building Malaysia's national brand through exports. The roadmap sets ambitious targets for 2030, including RM9 billion in digital creative industry revenue, RM6 billion in exports, RM6 billion in strategic investments, and the creation of 10,000 high-value jobs.
Wilson highlighted the need for collaboration among government entities, industry players, investors, educators, and creators to achieve these goals. He noted that Malaysia has a robust foundation for talent development with over 45 higher education institutions offering creative courses. However, he stressed the importance of ensuring graduates and professionals are equipped with the necessary skills, experience, and opportunities to pursue high-value careers.
He also pointed out the critical role of protecting intellectual property and respecting creators' rights amid technological advancements in the industry. Platforms like LEVEL UP KL could facilitate the connection of Malaysian studios with investors, publishers, and international markets, aiding in the growth of globally recognized businesses.
LEVEL UP KL, organized by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), serves as a regional platform that brings together game developers, publishers, investors, and technology leaders from around the world to foster business opportunities, international collaboration, and talent development.
