Kuala lumpur: The inaugural Paddy Art at Laman Padi, organized as part of the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Exhibition (MAHA) 2026, has been officially recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for its remarkable achievement as 'The Largest Paddy Art Formation'.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the artwork, which features the Jalur Gemilang alongside heart and hand motifs and the word 'Jati', was created using a staged planting technique. This method allows for distinct colour variations that emerge based on the maturity levels of the crops. The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, emphasized that the Paddy Art utilized the MR284 paddy variety and was the result of a strategic collaboration with private sector entities.
Mohamad Sabu highlighted the broader implications of this initiative, showcasing how paddy fields can transcend their traditional role in food production to become significant attractions through creative and innovative agrotourism. "This recognition proves the nation's agricultural sector can produce unique and creative outputs while opening avenues for new value creation," he stated during the MAHA 2026 Laman Padi opening at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS).
The MAHA 2026 Laman Padi spans a seven-acre (2.83 hectare) area and includes seven paddy plots along with two information centres and galleries, each offering unique experiences for visitors. Mohamad Sabu further explained that the potential of paddy fields extends beyond being grain-producing areas, as they can incorporate technology, education, and employment, thereby creating value through agrotourism.
He noted that agrotourism is increasingly popular, particularly among urban communities and younger generations who may not be as familiar with agricultural practices. "Paddy fields can be leveraged by introducing specific attractions or amenities that draw tourists, generating supplementary income for farmers and local communities," he added.
Meanwhile, Shamsul Akbar Sulaiman, the secretary of the Paddy Industry Development Division (PIP), stated that Laman Padi aims to attract about 10,000 visitors daily during the 10-day MAHA 2026 exhibition, with 4,000 visitors recorded yesterday. Shamsul Akbar explained that Laman Padi incorporates both traditional and modern elements to illustrate the evolution of the rice and paddy industry.
An infotainment approach is implemented to ensure visitors not only gain knowledge about paddy and rice but also engage in various activities, demonstrations, promotions, and interactive showcases. Educational aspects are prioritized, particularly for the younger generation, with approximately 10 schools involved in paddy-related activities providing students with hands-on planting experience.
Shamsul Akbar also noted that Laman Padi serves as a collaborative platform between the government and private-sector companies within the paddy and rice industry value chain. Companies like BERNAS and others have the opportunity to promote and showcase their products to visitors. Additionally, Laman Padi offers a wide selection of food choices and culinary concepts from across Malaysia.
