Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will share the country's expertise in the recovery of criminal assets, including its experience in handling the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case, through a special training programme to strengthen regional cooperation in combating corruption.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, its chief commissioner, Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman, stated that the special course, which is also proposed to be conducted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Academy (MACA), will focus on the aspect of asset recovery, particularly involving cases that require assets to be returned to their country of origin. The proposal was presented at the Seminar On Integrity In Major Infrastructure Projects, organised by the MACC in collaboration with the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) Hong Kong, which brought together experts and anti-corruption officers from several jurisdictions, including Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

"We will be the catalyst for the development of a module related to asset recovery for cases involving assets that need to be brought back to their respective countries. This is based on Malaysia's expertise in the field resulting from its experience in handling the asset recovery process related to the 1MDB case, and that experience will be shared with other countries, especially in the ASEAN region," Abd Halim said to reporters after officiating the seminar in conjunction with the ASEAN Parties Against Corruption (ASEAN-PAC) Secretariat Meeting.

He emphasized that Malaysia's experience and expertise would be shared with other countries so they could learn the ins and outs of handling such cases if they encounter them. "This proposal received positive feedback from the participating countries, and MACA is expected to organise the course this year," he added.

Meanwhile, Abd Halim highlighted that the seminar focused on efforts to strengthen collaboration between ASEAN-PAC member countries and Hong Kong in enhancing cooperation to combat corruption. Many matters were discussed, and collaboration proposals will be made among ASEAN-PAC countries, not just as problem-solving measures but to facilitate and strengthen that cooperation.
