Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) has set a target to train 50,000 skilled caregivers for the elderly by 2030. This initiative aims to address the challenges associated with Malaysia's status as an ageing nation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the target is part of the National Senior Citizens Action Plan (PTWEN) 2026-2030, which supports the development of a comprehensive elderly care ecosystem, focusing on long-term care. Lim Hui Ying, the deputy minister, emphasized the need for a holistic approach that involves various ministries and active private sector participation.

The ministry's initiatives include the Malaysia Care Strategic Framework and Action Plan 2026-2030, which outlines measures for improving elderly care. This framework encourages Public-Private Partnership (PPP) efforts to enhance home care services and expand private care centres. Lim shared these details while responding to a question from Senator Dr. Wan Martina Wan Yusoff in the Dewan Negara, addressing concerns about financing the rising costs of elderly care as Malaysia progresses towards becoming an ageing nation.
