KPKM Initiates Reverse Investment Strategy for Food Security – Mohamad Sabu

Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) is leading a reverse investment strategy this year to secure the country's supply of essential food commodities. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu emphasized the need for the government to shift from short-term, reactive measures to more strategic actions to fortify the national food supply chain.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the reverse investment strategy will focus on key sectors such as cattle, rice, dairy, and seeds and breeds, which are critical to the national food chain. This approach is designed to protect these areas from global supply disruptions. The initiative involves direct government or private investment in food production, including land, technology, and seeds, to reduce dependency on imports and maintain a stable, secure, and sustainable food supply amidst market or climate challenges.

Mohamad Sabu highlighted the importance of collaboration with government-linked companies and investment firms as strategic partners to secure national interests in the critical supply chain. He stated that their involvement is crucial for enhancing food sovereignty and ensuring the resilience of Malaysia's food system in the long term.

The minister clarified that the reverse investment strategy is not intended to replace local farmers but to act as a strategic buffer, ensuring supply chain sustainability during unexpected events, including natural disasters. Each investment will be implemented gradually and with prudence, keeping in mind national interests.

KPKM is also concentrating on boosting domestic investment to enhance the capacity and competitiveness of the agri-food sector. The five strategic focuses include developing the aquaculture industry, employing Geographic Information Systems in production, grain corn cultivation, expanding pineapple farming, and increasing domestic seed and breed production. These priority areas are essential for strengthening local production, reducing reliance on external sources, and building a more resilient and sustainable agri-food sector.

KPKM Secretary-General Datuk Seri Isham Ishak added that the reverse investment strategy serves as a national safeguard against crises or disasters. Measures such as cultivating rice abroad ensure that supplies remain available if needed, allowing Malaysia to grow it overseas and import it back into the country.
