Korean Ambassador Reflects on Malaysia’s Cultural Diversity

Kuala lumpur: While commemorating his third and final year in Malaysia, the Korean Ambassador has penned a reflective article that captures the moments of joy and connection he experienced while serving in the country. Since his arrival in October 2022, he, along with his wife, has traveled extensively across various states, tasting local delicacies and engaging deeply with Malaysia's cultural diversity. He expressed honor in having the opportunity to exchange views with people from different backgrounds, deepening friendships and capturing the essence of "Malaysia, Truly Asia."

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Ambassador highlighted Malaysia as a nation of diversity, where Malays, Chinese, Indians, and many other ethnic and religious communities coexist. This pluralism is especially striking to Koreans from a relatively homogenous society. Malaysia's diversity is vividly expressed through its food, festivals, dances, and music, with each community's cultural heritage being a treasured national asset. The Ambassador noted that this mosaic of traditions fuels Malaysia's potential to develop vibrant cultural content and expand its soft power globally.

The coexistence of multiple ethnicities, religions, and cultures in Malaysia has a long history, predating the formation of the federation itself. He referred to the Peranakan attire in the Melaka Museum as an illustration of how cultural strands have interacted over centuries. While some societies aim for a majority-centered "melting pot," Malaysia embraces a model of coexistence, celebrating differences and harmony in a "mosaic society."

Diversity and inclusivity have long been celebrated in Malaysia. The willingness of Malaysians to acknowledge and appreciate differences reflects the foresight of early leaders. The national motto, Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu (Unity Is Strength), captures the country's past, present, and future vision. On a personal note, the Ambassador expressed his fondness for rojak, a popular fruit and vegetable salad from Malaysia, which he often recommends to visitors from Korea, highlighting its harmonious blend of flavors as a metaphor for Malaysia itself.
