Penang: Kumpulan Medic Iman Sdn Bhd (KMI Healthcare), a subsidiary of TDM Bhd, has signed a build-and-lease agreement with Bertam Specialist Hospital Sdn Bhd (BSHSB) to develop a 100-bed hospital in Bertam, Seberang Perai Utara, Penang. The hospital, with a gross development cost of about RM146 million, will be built on a 0.85-hectare site, about a 10-minute drive from the Kepala Batas toll exit.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, KMI Healthcare chief executive officer Dr Rayney Azmi Ali stated that the company would lease the facility from BSHSB for an initial 18-year term, with an option to extend for another 12 years. Dr Rayney mentioned Bertam as a strategic choice, noting its population of 117,043, and identified the existing gap in healthcare provision, currently serviced only by a government hospital, as an opportunity for KMI Healthcare.
Dr Rayney also pointed out Penang’s increasing prominence as a medical tourism hub, especially attracting patients from Indonesia. He emphasized that with Penang Island facing congestion, this new facility on the mainland would provide patients with additional access to medical services. The advanced healthcare infrastructure, coupled with affordability and cultural amenities, positions the hospital to offer international patients quality medical services.
BSHSB managing director Datuk Seri A K Teng commented on the hospital’s strategic location and modern infrastructure, which he believes will set a new standard for healthcare delivery in the area. He emphasized the collaboration’s focus on combining resources, expertise, and commitment to deliver lasting value to the community.
The planned hospital will include advanced medical and surgical facilities, featuring centres of excellence, diagnostic services, and patient-focused care units. The construction is scheduled to commence this year, with completion anticipated by 2028.
